3. Addressing the challenges that come with the first two things

This podcast discusses all of the nuances and complexities within these seemingly simple ideas, to connect and build relation to the same audiences we aspire to reach with our creative practices. Join us for some laughs, some serious moments, some sticky situations, and for the love of art!

What is the beef?

The beef can be both positive and negative. On one hand it is the meat of your career and life as an artist, the accomplishments, ambitions, nuances, the nitty-gritty labor that you put into being an artist. On the other hand, it’s the grievances, disappointments and challenges you face in your pursuits, aka the beef.

What do we hope to accomplish?

Growth is number one in being an artist, the things you had to grow from to get to this point as well as the growth you hope to gain going forward. This podcast is a symbol of my own growth to this point and where I’d like to grow going forward

Support for artists comes in many different forms but the best support doesn’t come from a specific group of people; it can come from all over and completely unexpected places. Even just truly understanding the subtleties and nuances that an artist has to engage in the process of creating and showing their work, can be the kind of support that inspires the artist to go further. In our capitalist society, it will always be necessary for the artist to survive, and that financial support does go a long way, however the opportunity to show the work and engage with audiences that make honest efforts to understand the conversation you are trying to have is invaluable.

Culture- we live in a society that favors immediacy, convenience and comfort. This is fine for artists in the commercial and social media realm. It’s not about some grand question or narrative that needs to be addressed, commercial art very often is utilitarian or presented as a product. Most fine art is never immediate, never convenient, and often meant to disrupt comfortability. sometimes physically and often times mentally and emotionally. This podcast looks to impact the culture of creators, artists, art lovers, people who like art but don’t understand it, unexpected audiences, museums, galleries, and collectors…to see the hidden labor, learn the process of creation and navigation within the art world, and most importantly ask the right questions. We don’t want to continue some boring rhetoric of critique and historical analysis; we want to engage the conversation of art from a place of understanding and openness to creative process in all its manifestations.

How do we get there?

Slowly but surely. No doubt anyone who knows anything about artists knows that they are always on the move, always working on something new, and that we can sometimes fall off the map. This podcast is an attempt for us to stay on the map, keep our community informed about the journey, and engage with our contemporaries in ways that we may not otherwise. Right now episodes are sporadic and inconsistent, but all things have to start somewhere and at a natural pace. Building a community around this podcast is also a measure of accountability for us to remain engaged with our community. All that to say, we will only grow if you all grow with us. All we ask of our audience is that you are open to the conversations we have here, that you take that openness out into the world with you, and that you share what we are doing with others. There will be chances to buy merch and things to support us financially, but sharing the content really does make a big difference, as we said earlier. Financial support does a lot in this society, but your engagement with the work is invaluable.
